DISAPPEARING THE WORKHOUSE FOR GOOD

Since 1966, thousands of Black St. Louisans were caged and criminalized at the Workhouse, the city’s medium security institution. Most held there were only guilty of not being given a chance.

In 2022, we successfully emptied the Workhouse jail. It has sat vacant ever since. But empty does not equal closed. There’s still work to be done.
