St. Louis City Public Safety Committee Hearing at City Hall
In 2024, the Public Safety Committee met to review findings from the Re-envision the Workhouse report which provides community-input on what should become of the former jail and land surrounding it. Click here for a recap of those hearings.
Re-envisioning Public Safety Town Hall & Debrief
The Close the Workhouse and Defund. Re-envision. Transform campaigns held a town hall on February 8th with Mayor Tishaura Jones, where she shared important updates and responses to questions from the community about the status of the Workhouse closure. On February 15th, we held a community debrief to talk through what we learned, what we still need answers to, and what we should do next.

Ways and Means Committee Meetings
10:00am - 1:00pm on May 20th, May 26th, May 27th, May 28th, June 2nd
The Ways and Means Committee will be holding meetings over the next two weeks to discuss the proposed 2021 City Budget. We want to show up at EVERY virtual meeting to show that we are watching as they decide how to spend our tax dollars and to demand that the Workhouse be completely defunded!
Press conference for the release of CTW report 2.0

To Kickoff 2020 Close the Workhouse will hold a press conference for the release of the CTW report 2.0 which details the importance of campaign, tangible resources we can provide when we close the workhouse, and details about changes in cash bail, number of people currently in the workhouse and data on current people in the workhouse.
Humans of the Workhouse

On Wednesday, we will unveil an integral element of our new communications strategy called Humans of the Workhouse, which uses visual storytelling to invoke empathy and realness of the lives of people in our community who have been thrown away in the Workhouse. This will be a digital launch coordinated across our social media platforms (twitter, youtube, facebook, instagram)
Rally at Board of Aldermen meeting
January 17th 9:30am arrival (tentative), 10:45am actual rally start time.
On Friday, we will commence our 2020 BOA by mobilizing a large rally at the BOA meeting on this day to show our elected officials that we aren’t going anywhere until the workhouse is closed.
Movement Meetings
A monthly movement meeting takes place every first Thursday of the month from 6-8 at the Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being (1000 N. Vandeventer). The monthly movement meetings are a chance to hear updates on the Close The Workhouse Campaign and from CTW core organizations Action St. Louis, The Bail Project, Arch City Defenders. Monthly movement meetings provide a space to learn about community service providers and resources. Please rsvp at ClosetheWorkhouse@gmail.com.
